Janice Monk

Janice Jones Monk is a Research Professor at the Southwest Institute for Research on Women (SIROW) and Professor of Geography at University of Arizona. At SIROW she has developed and participated in projects focusing on women's employment, education, health, and culture, emphasizing the diversity of women in the Southwest and at the Mexico-U.S. border. Her faculty development work has emphasized international perspectives. 

As a feminist geographer, she writes on issues related to the history of women in the discipline, on comparative international perspectives, on landscape, and on geographic education. Among her awards are the Australia International Medal (Institute of Australian Geographers); George J. Miller Distinguished Service Award (National Council for Geographic Education); Lifetime Achievement Honors (Association of American Geographers); and Taylor and Francis Award (Royal Geographical Society/Institute of British Geographers).

Her publications include a number co-authored or co-edited books among them Full Circles: Geographies of Women over the Life Course; The Desert Is No Lady: Southwestern Landscapes in Women's Writing and Art; and Encompassing Gender: Integrating International Studies and Women's Studies, as well as journal articles and book chapters. She has been a visiting professor/scholar in India, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand.
