SIROW Researchers Presented at the 2023 Art & Science of Health Promotion Conference.

SIROW researchers Courtney Waters and Shannon Fowler presented at the 2023 Art & Science of Health Promotion Conference in Colorado Springs, CO this past March. The annual conference narrows the gap between research and practice by facilitating dialogue and collaboration between practitioners and scientists across many spheres. Courtney and Shannon’s presentation on It starts within: The role of personal reflection and growth in equity work focused on individual-level work that must be done to advance LGBTQ+ equity – by exploring where personal beliefs originate and how to disrupt those that are harmful and examining the role of privilege in our lives and work. In post-presentation surveys, attendees expressed appreciation for the opportunity to evaluate their internal influences in their work; the space to be honest, transparent, and vulnerable; the resources that were shared; and tools that they could use in their own curriculum design. One attendee wrote, “It helps me to understand the barriers that those I work with face that I am not even aware.”
