WISE's Girls Who Code Club Awarded $10,000
WISE's Girls Who Code Club has been awarded a $10,000 grant from global engineering company Fluor to support efforts to close the gender gap in tech by increasing access to girl-centered coding and technology education and community building. Girls Who Code Lead Facilitator and Program Coordinator Vanessa Campbell accepted the awarded at the annual Waste Management Symposium held in Phoenix, Arizona on March 8th. This conference attracts thousands of professionals from government, private, and non-governmental sectors who engage in activities focused on effectively remediating toxic waste and ensuring the safe waste management practices. The awarded was presented at a panel event featuring successful women in waste management, who shared their experiences growing as leaders and advice to women in the field. Vanessa was able to share a bit about her experience joining Girls Who Code as a high school student and how the experience shaped her academic path. She encouraged the audience to take the time to engage girls and young women and help create inclusive environments where they feel welcomed and supported. WISE looks forward to using these funds to continue our work supporting the development of diverse and inclusive computer science and tech fields. Thanks, Fluor!
